Arrived at Great Sand Dunes early afternoon today - only a 109 mile trip.
We had hoped for relief from the heat up here but even the mountains are having record high temps.
20 degrees cooler than the 105 of Kansas, but still very hot if not in the shade - the sun is very intense in the thinner air. We are over 8,000 ft in elevation so the air is cool and refreshing, but that sun!
Once again we find ourselves wishing we had a Jeep to explore all the back (4WD only) roads available to those with the proper vehicles. Some great places are up in the mountains but require the off-road vehicles to reach. So we won't see much driving around here with our Honda. We do have a fantastic view of the Dunes right from our campsite however.
There is no electricity to run the A/C so we could not leave Issy in the RV to hike up the Dunes today.
It clouded up late this afternoon and spitted rain on and off until about now - 8:00pm. Hoping it will stay cloudy or at least cooler tomorrow so we can climb the big Dunes - about 4 hours round trip while Issy stays comfortable in the RV. We were happy to do nothing today and just enjoy our surroundings and be out of the oven of Kansas!
We do have cell service here, but not high speed to do pictures easily. We hope to get some good shots of the Dunes tomorrow from the top and will share them as soon as we can.
Our plan is to stay here a total of three nights, then on down the road to Mesa Verde National Park. But that will probably change - our plans always do.
That's it for today.
